notes: holding onto interpretation

The complaint: “[the violent | racist | hateful | (etc) doesn’t represent my [religion | politics | philosophy]…”

But, what to do when the [religion|politics|philosophy] does so little to dissuade these of their worst, in fact offering so much from which to draw the worst that you must then work so hard to disavow?

What is to be made of a religion, a politic, a “philosophy” on which you cannot rely on the plain words of the foundational documents, but rather must cling to ever more baroque interpretations that tell you, as it turns out, only what you already knew about in your better ethics?
